We were hired by
Adirondack Scenic to assist in the installation of the scenery for
the Outer Limits Roller Coaster at Paramount's Kings Dominion.
In an effort to compete with the themed rides one might find at a
Disney Park, Paramount created this Space Mountain like ride which
was based on the premise that you were entering a space ship and
taking a ride. This was the first ride in the world to use
Linear Induction Motors as a propulsion system. Instead of
being dragged up a hill by a chain, electrical fields are generated
that accelerate the train to 66 MPH in 3 seconds. As the
system's designer put it "it's like riding in a 3 1/2 ton Ferrari". Our
technicians performed all types of tasks from modifying scenery to
fit to welding lighting positions to trying to keep the saucer clean
(the sign says FOR SALE, low mileage, one owner).
