In 1995, the
recently opened Ivy Corner Garden Center and Gift Shop wanted to
light up the night sky and asked us to create a few pieces for a
rooftop display. The original display consisted of a crescent
moon about 3 feet high and several large stars. It was such a
hit that the next year they added a few more stars. The
following year the moon was enlarged to 6 feet tall. Over the
years the display has grown and evolved. In the wake of the
events of September 11, the 2001 display featured an American flag
with twinkling stars.
The moon is now over 8 feet high and is orbited by several
stars. The roof is covered by a custom built net of over
25,000 blue bulbs. The stars are varying sizes with between
100 and 300 bulbs each. The dragonfly is 10 feet long and has
over 1,000 bulbs. To get the right look, the moon and
dragonfly are made with clear bulbs which are then individually
painted the correct colors.
In addition to creating and installing the display, we also
designed the power distribution system and timing systems which
turn it on and off. |
